How getting a medicinal cannabis prescription works in Australia
- Talk to a doctor. Start with your regular GP. Your doctor decides what treatment, if any, is suitable.
- The doctor decides. They look at your health history and other treatments you have tried. Medicinal cannabis isn't suitable for everyone, and the decision is theirs.
- Approval, when it's needed. Most medicinal cannabis products are not on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), so doctors prescribe them through the TGA's Special Access Scheme – Category B (SAS-B) or as an Authorised Prescriber. Some states and territories add their own steps.
- A pharmacy fills the script. Prescriptions are often sent as an eScript (a token by SMS or email). Not every pharmacy keeps medicinal cannabis in stock, so call ahead.

Good to know
- Telehealth. Many doctors offer telehealth consultations. Your doctor will explain any prescription they issue.
- Ask about fees first. Consultation fees differ between clinics — ask before you book.
- It's a prescription medicine. Medicinal cannabis products are prescription medicines in Australia, and Australian law doesn't allow prescription medicines to be advertised to the public — so we don't name products, prices or "best" lists here.
- Driving. In most states and territories it is an offence to drive with THC in your system, even with a prescription. In NSW, new medicinal cannabis driving laws passed in September 2026 but haven't started yet — until they do, driving with THC present is still an offence there too (as at October 2026).
- Who regulates it? The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates medicinal cannabis as a medicine; the Office of Drug Control (ODC) licenses growing and manufacturing. More: TGA vs ODC.
